Pressure defense, balanced scoring combine to give ZT opening night win
After the other seven SVC schools saw their seasons get underway over the weekend, Zane Trace was waiting for Tuesday night’s SVC opener. The Lady Pioneers were at Southeastern to tip-off their year, and their outstanding pressure defense on one end and their balanced scoring on the other combined to give ZT an easy 52-23 win over the Lady Panthers.
How good was ZT’s defensive effort? Southeastern scored its first field goal on a Neysa Triplett midrange jumper with 4:20 remaining in the second quarter. Meanwhile, Zane Trace’s offense had contributions from multiple players all night. In the first quarter, four different Lady Pioneers scored to help ZT lead 11-1 after one. The lead eventually grew to 26-8 at the half.
In the second half, Zane Trace was never threatened as they cruised to the SVC win. Erin Dailey led the red, white, and blue with 16 points. Sierra Sigman and Kelsey Dunkle each scored 10 points and point guard Jenna Wiget added eight points. For Southeastern, Sophie McCorkle and Keisha Brown both scored seven points to lead the Lady Panthers.
