| Playing the game and remaining games dedicated to their fallen senior captain Shiann Ray, the Unioto Lady Shermans rolled past the New Lexington Panthers 49-35 at the opening game of the Division II District Tournament, hosted by Southeastern High School on Thursday.
A huge Unioto fan following dwarfed New Lexington's followers. It had to help that the Tanks were 15 minutes from the gym while New Lexington was two hours away. Ray, a first-team all-conference selection, is sidelined indefinitely with a knee injury suffered earlier this week in the sectional title game. Her Unioto teammates are honoring Ray by inking her jersey number “3” onto their legs. Unioto led from start to finish, jumping to a 15-8 edge after one quarter and coasting into halftime on top 27-23. The Tanks put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring the Panthers 16-6 and never let the lead slip below 12 points. Sophomore center Mackenzie Arledge led the Tanks with 19 points and 15 rebounds. She also blocked six shots. Sophomore guard Janae Driggs chipped in with eight points, two assists and two steals while junior forward Chloe Cottrill scored nine points and collected 10 rebounds and two assists. With the district semifinal win, Unioto wins a berth to the Convocation Center in Athens and the district championship game, set for 3 p.m. Saturday, March 7. Unioto will take on Greenfield McClain, a 56-45 winner over Warren in Thursday's nightcap. |
