The Paint Valley girls’ basketball program won back-to-back SVC Golden Basketballs in 1996 and 1997. This 28-game winning streak does mark the only team in league history to record two straight perfect seasons; however, SVCsportszone recently found a source that highlights another streak as the league’s best ever.

According to John R. Skinner’s
Yesterday’s Pastimes of Ross County, Ohio, the Lady Mustangs of Westfall recorded 38 straight wins from 1981 to 1983. On page 345 of this source, it states that the 1983 Huntington squad, which finished 17-3 behind 1,000-point scorer Robbi Montgomery, beat Westfall to break the league champion Westfall’s league win streak of 38 games.

The exact starting and ending point of this 38-game winning streak is unknown. SVCsportszone has contacted Dennis Karshner (who led WF to SVC titles in 1981, 1982, and 1983 while being named COY in all three seasons), and he is trying to research old records to confirm the details.

According to our
SVC girls’ basketball history page here on SVCsportszone, it is believed that Westfall lost early in the 1980-1981 season (a year they won the league with a 15-1 record). Westfall then continued the streak in the 1981-1982 season with a perfect 15-0 mark (Coach Karshner said he believed that season consisted of only 15 games instead of 16 due to weather canceling a game and it not being made up due to WF’s big league lead). Finally, the streak continued into the second half of the 1982-1983 season before losing to Huntington to end the streak at 38.
