Championship game from Waverly
In what shaped up to be a tough weekend for the SVC, Saturday night’s all-SVC Division-III
Sectional Championship at least assured one SVC boys’ team a chance to advance to the district
tournament. This game completely erased the theory of it being hard to beat a team three times as the
Redstreaks controlled this one the whole way in route to a 90-58 win.

Piketon’s pressure made this game way too fast and too chaotic for Westfall to keep pace. The
Redstreaks jumped out to a 22-9 lead after one and stretched it to 48-26 at halftime. Sophomores Zach
Farmer and Craigen Moore both played outstanding in the first half. Farmer, a 6’4 athletic lefty,
showed off his entire skill set as he knocked down the midrange jumper off the catch, hit a deep three, hit
a pull-up midrange jumper in transition, and excited the huge Piketon crowd with an amazing chase down
block. As for Moore, he hurt Westfall on the backside boards. On multiple occasions he provided
Piketon with second-chance opportunities. In a game that was “loosely called both ways, Piketon
simply won the 50/50 balls the majority of the time and then capitalized the extra possessions into points.

Westfall showed signs of cutting into the lead in the second quarter, but a late spurt – highlighted by a
triple from Matt Lewis and a few big plays from Jacob Braniff – really put the explanation on the first
half for Piketon.

For Westfall, the loss ends the 2010-2011 season, however, the 2011-2012 season looks like some
good times are coming for the Mustangs. Riley Fetherolf and Calib Puckett are the only two seniors on
the Westfall roster, and two sophomores – Doug Hardin and Alek Stonerock – combined for 29
points to lead Westfall in the loss. You combine this with Westfall returning its leading scorer in Derek
Robertson along with the top junior varsity squad in the league, and Westfall should be ready to contend
for next year’s title.

Evan Legg led the Redstreaks with 18 points. Legg now has 1,427 career points
(ranked 10th all-
time). Click here to see tonight’s McDonald’s i’m lovin’ it SVC Boys’ Basketball
