Near nightmare second half saved by Sigman’s heroics
The first half was the perfect Zane Trace formula. Great defense holding a talented Peebles team to just 11 first half points as well as great perimeter shooting including a pair of triples from Kelsey Dunkle and Jenna Wiget. Add it all up after 16 minutes and Zane Trace was up 23-11 heading to the half seemingly well on their way to Athens next week.
The second half completely watched the momentum take a turn the other way. Zane Trace started to experience some terrible foul trouble, and now it was Peebles who started to apply the pressure causing several ZT turnovers. By the time the third quarter ended, Peebles was all the way within one at 35-34. Twice in the fourth quarter Zane Trace stretch their lead to two possessions, but each time Peebles proved to have an answer. Finally, with the game tied at 43-43, Zane Trace took a timeout with 1:22 remaining in the game.
Zane Trace did a solid job over the next minute dribbling, passing, and catching the basketball as the Lady Pioneers were able to milk the clock all the way down to 12 seconds when Coach Dunkle took another timeout. The final play had an early breakdown causing a shot from Wiget from the left wing. A Peebles defender got a hand on Wiget’s shot, but Sierra Sigman was there to clean it up and delivered the game-winner as time expired giving the Lady Pioneers the 45-43 win.
The Pioneers received contributions from many people in the win. Freshman Hayley Carle did a great job defensively while delivering two key first quarter field goals when Sigman was in foul trouble. Joanna Saultz also played well as she was forced into major minutes as Dunkle fouled out early in the fourth quarter. Finally, Erin Dailey recorded her normal solid performance where she impacts the game on both ends. Dailey led ZT with 13 points. The senior also recorded nine rebounds and six blocks.
