|Top-seeded Fairland eliminates ZT from tournament
Fairland started both the first and third quarters with
equally impressive spurts to control Friday’s
Division-III Sectional Championship from start to
finish. To Zane Trace’s credit, the Pioneers
were able to withstand the first run, but it was the
second that gave Fairland an advantage that the
Pioneers could not answer as top-seeded Fairland
knocked ZT out of the tournament with a 62-44 win.
The first quarter run was a 13-2 spurt to start the
game. Zane Trace gradually worked its way back
as the Pioneers were within five at the end of the
first quarter at 15-10, and they continued to play
well in the second quarter pulling within four at
halftime at 28-24.
The Dragons once again spurted in the third quarter,
and it was this run that would prove to be the
difference. Zane Trace, who had 13 offensive
rebounds on the night, had some put-back
opportunities early in the third quarter to cut into the
Fairland lead, but the Pioneers were unable to
convert as Fairland outscored ZT 19-10 in the third
quarter to push the lead to double-figures.
In the loss, Zane Trace was led by Ben LaGard
with 11 points. Wes Beam added 10 points while
Ian Carle and Jesson Hill finished with nine and six
respectively. The loss marks the end of road for
four ZT seniors: LaGard, Joel Tripp, Mike Moore,
and J.R. McCary.
