In a year where no SVC team has been able to beat
Piketon for 32 minutes, the Unioto Shermans tied the
Redstreaks Friday night; however, it was Piketon who
jumped out quickly in the extra session to win 57-52.
The win makes Piketon the outright SVC champions,
and it moves them within two wins of the golden
basketball.

I had mentioned that Thursday night’s atmosphere
at the girls’ game was somewhat flat. This was not
the case Friday night at all. Both crowds were in it from
the beginning. Similar to the first meeting between
Piketon and Unioto, it was Piketon jumping out to an
early lead only to see the Shermans come fighting back.
Unioto was having success in transition with Brick Davis
getting into the paint and finishing a few times at the rim.
Christian Dunkle was also able to get loose as he
knocked down a couple of triples to help Unioto lead
by four at the half.

Piketon’s pressure defense started to take its toll on
Unioto in the second half. Piketon’s Evan Legg was
able to get some opportunities in the open court. Once
Piketon did get a second half lead, I was impressed
with their ability to execute some time and score
situations on the offensive end; however, a lot of this
solid play ended up being spoiled by Piketon’s
inability to put the game away at the charity stripe. This
gave Unioto life at the end of the game, and Cole
Murray responded with a three-pointer to send the
game to OT tied at 47-47.

The key stretch in OT came when Piketon was up 54-
50. Piketon was whistled for a foul and then a technical
foul giving Unioto four free throws and the ball. Unioto
missed all four free throws. Even then, Unioto fought
back to within 55-52 and had a good look at a triple to
tie the game again, but the shot hit short. Piketon finally
converted at the line to secure the championship.

Piketon will not have much time to celebrate their
Friday night win. Piketon will return to action Saturday
night at OU-C against Vinton County – a team who
clinched the Tri Valley Conference title Friday night with
a win at Nelsonville York.
