Thursday night was a battle for second-place in the Scioto Valley Conference and in many ways it could have been considered a â €œmustâ€ win for both Unioto and Westfall. With Adena moving to 6-0 with their win over Southeastern, the Lady Shermans and the Lady Mustangs both were in need of a win to stay just one back of the Lady Warriors in the standings.
Westfall entered playing really well of late while Unioto entered following a sluggish performance at Huntington Tuesday night. To Unioto’s credit, the purple and gold did come out with a much higher energy level Thursday night, but an extremely focused Westfall team used an early 6-0 run in game one to open up a comfortable lead that resulted in a 25-14 first-set victory.
The second set looked as if Westfall was going to pull away again, but with Westfall leading 21-17, Madison Davis and her Unioto squad came alive. Davis recorded three kills in the next four points to tie the set at 21-21. Unioto’s Sydney Coman then delivered an ace to give Unioto a 22-21 advantage. Westfall’s Olivia Cobb then answered with one of her match-high 14 kills to notch things up at 22-22. Haylie Joyce then finished the deal with three straight serving points – a run that started and ended with an ace for the 25-22 second-set win.
Unioto had early control of game three. Unioto’s Hannah Miller recorded an early kill for a 9-4, Unioto lead, but following a Unioto service error, Westfallâ €™s Hannah Gabriel started to take over the set. Gabriel produced six straight points including an ace and several other tough serves that made it tough for Unioto to get any sort of attack. The two teams then started to trade points. In fact the set saw ties on the scoreboard at 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15, but when Westfall scored to go up 16-15, Unioto would never lead again as an Alex Phillips kill would eventually end the straight set win for Westfall with a 25-18 game three final.
The win moves Westfall to 5-1 in the league and 5-1 overall. Unioto drops its fourth straight match as they fall to 4-2 in the SVC and 6- 4 overall. The two teams end first- round play Tuesday when Westfall travels to Piketon and Unioto visits Adena.
