| The Adena Lady Warriors pulled out a first-set win in one of the best sets of volleyball you will ever watch, and then used the momentum to cruise to a straight set win. In that first game, Alexander jumped out quickly forcing Laura Smith to use both of her timeouts in the early going. As Adena got back in the set, it was Alexander’s turn to use timeouts to break the momentum. Finally, Alexander broke a 23-23 tie to setup set point; however, Adena answered to tie it back up at 24-24. The two teams repeated this seesaw scoring allowing Alexander to have five opportunities to end the set. Adena survived all five bringing the set to another tie at 28-28. At this point, it was Adena’s turn to score first as the two teams started to seesaw again. Like Adena, Alexander was successful in surviving two set points, but with Adena up 31-30, Adena’s Kelsey Bielanow took advantage of an Alexander overpass to give the Lady Warriors the 32-30 first-set victory.
The wild win set the tone for the rest of the regional championship. Sets two and three were all Adena as the Lady Warriors punched their ticket to Dayton with a 32-30, 25-18, 25-18 win. For Adena, Bielanow led the way with 13 kills. Olivia Arledge continued her great play on the backside producing nine kills. Kirsti Yates gave her typical heart-and-soul effort recording 12 digs and four kills while fellow senior Allison Morgan added seven kills. Quarterbacking the balanced Adena attack was setter Hannah Halcomb. Halcomb had 38 assists, eight digs, and a pair of aces. Rounding out the production for Adena, Jenny Grigsby had seven digs and three kills, Cara Coy recorded 10 digs, and Logan Bowdle had nine digs and an ace. Adena advances to the Final Four where they will meet the winner of Gilmour Academy and Smithville. The state semifinal match is at Wright State this Friday with a start time slated for noon. |
